# U.S. Public Companies Data Feed Tags

Intrinio has complied several standardized tag sets to simplify complex financial data to make it easier for you to compare across time periods, companies, industries and more. There are two primary tag sets, the Industrial and Financial Standardized Tags. All companies that are classified as a financial company have had their financial statements standardized using the Intrinio Financial Tags, while all other companies are standardized with the Intrinio Industrial Tags.

In addition, we allow you to slice and dice financial data in various ways, including Intrinio Data Point and Intrinio Historical Data. Intrinio Data Point is a simple way to access the most recent data point for a desired company and tag – it includes quantitative and qualitative data types. Intrinio Historical Data is designed for time series quantitative data, which gives you greater control over the exact output desired.

Lastly, we have economic data, which is also time series data for a desired statistic of the data set.

### Calculations

#### Net Operating Profit after Tax (NOPAT)

##### Description

Net operating profit after tax (NOPAT) is a company’s potential cash earnings if its capitalization were unleveraged – that is, if it had no debt. NOPAT is a more accurate look at operating efficiency for leveraged companies, and it does not include the tax savings many companies get because of existing debt.

##### Labeled Formula

$ ext{NOPAT=(Total Pre-Tax Income−Total Non-Operating Income)(1−(Income Tax ExpenseTotal Pre-Tax Income))}$##### Tagset Formula

$ ext{nopat=(totalpretaxincome−nonoperatingincome)(1−(incometaxexpensetotalpretaxincome))}$#### Normalized Net Operating Profit after Tax (NOPAT)

##### Description

Normalized Net Operating Profit after Tax are adjusted to remove the effects of seasonality, revenue and expenses that are unusual or one-time influences.

##### Labeled Formula

$ ext{Normalized Net Operating Profit after Tax (NOPAT) = (Total Pre-Tax Income−Total Non-Operating Income+Impairment Charge+Restructuring Charge+Other Special Charges)}\left(1- ext{}\left(\frac{ ext{Income Tax Expense}}{ ext{Total Pre-Tax Income}}\right)\right)$##### Tagset Formula

$ ext{normalizednopat = (totalpretaxincome−nonoperatingincome+impairmentexpense+restructuringcharge+otherspecialcharges)}\left( ext{1−}\left(\frac{ ext{incometaxexpense}}{ ext{totalpretaxincome}}\right)\right)$#### Net Nonoperating Expense (NNE)

##### Description

A non-operating expense is an expense incurred by a business that’s unrelated to its core operations. The most common types of non-operating expenses relate to depreciation, amortization, interest charges or other costs of borrowing.

##### Labeled Formula

$ ext{Net Nonoperating Expense (NNE)}= ext{NOPAT}- ext{Net Income}$##### Tagset Formula

CROCI provides analysts with a cash flow based metric for evaluating the earnings of a company. Also known as “cash return on cash invested”. Cash return on capital invested is a variation of the economic profit model. In essence, CROCI measures the cash profits of a company as a proportion of the funding required to generate them. It acknowledges both common and preferred share equity (as well as long-term funded debt) as sources of capital.

A company with high return on equity (ROE) is more successful in generating cash internally. Investors are always looking for companies with high and growing returns on common equity. However, not all high ROE companies make good investments. The better benchmark is to compare a company’s return on common equity with its industry average. The higher the ratio, the better the company.

##### Description

Debt/EBITDA is a measure of a company’s ability to pay off its incurred debt. The ratio gives the investor the approximate amount of time that would be needed to pay off all debt, ignoring the factors of interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. Commonly used by credit rating agencies to assess a company’s probability of defaulting on issued debt, a high Debt/EBITDA ratio suggests that a firm may not be able to service its debt in an appropriate manner and warrants a lowered credit rating.

$ ext{netdebttoebitda =}\frac{ ext{netdebt}}{ ext{ebitda}}$#### Long-Term Debt to EBITDA

##### Description

A high ratio of Long-Term debt to EBITDA reveals a company that’s deep in debt. It will have a lower credit rating and be forced to offer higher yields on bonds. Generally, a ratio of 4 or higher is considered too high, though the benchmarks of specific industries should be weighed, as well. Most companies have a ratio higher than 1 (equal amounts debt and EBITDA). Some have higher EBITDA than debt, resulting in a ratio that’s less than 1. The Long-Term debt to EBITDA ratio does not include the risks of excess cash or capital expenditures on a company’s finances, so it should be used with caution when evaluating a company.

##### Description

The price-to-book ratio (P/B Ratio) is a ratio used to compare a stock’s market value to its book value. A lower P/B ratio could mean that the stock is undervalued. However, it could also mean that something is fundamentally wrong with the company. As with most ratios, be aware that this varies by industry. This ratio also gives some idea of whether you’re paying too much for what would be left if the company went bankrupt immediately.

##### Description

A valuation ratio that compares a company’s stock price to its revenues. The price-to-revenue ratio is an indicator of the value placed on each dollar of a company’s revenues. It can be calculated either by dividing the company’s market capitalization by its total sales over a 12-month period, or on a per-share basis by dividing the stock price by sales per share for a 12-month period. Like all ratios, the price-to-sales ratio is most relevant when used to compare companies in the same sector. A low ratio may indicate possible undervaluation, while a ratio that is significantly above the average may suggest overvaluation.

##### Description

The price-earnings ratio (P/E Ratio) is the ratio for valuing a company that measures its current share price relative to its per-share earnings. The price-earnings ratio indicates the dollar amount an investor can expect to invest in a company in order to receive one dollar of that company’s earnings. This is why the P/E is sometimes referred to as the multiple because it shows how much investors are willing to pay per dollar of earnings.

##### Description

The cash conversion cycle (CCC) is a metric that expresses the length of time, in days, that it takes for a company to convert resource inputs into cash flows. The cash conversion cycle attempts to measure the amount of time each net input dollar is tied up in the production and sales process before it is converted into cash through sales to customers. This metric looks at the amount of time needed to sell inventory, the amount of time needed to collect receivables and the length of time the company is afforded to pay its bills without incurring penalties.

##### Labeled Formula

Cash Conversion Cycle = Days Sales Outstanding + Days Inventory Outstanding - Days Payable Outstanding

##### Tagset Formula

#### Current Ratio

##### Description

The current ratio is a liquidity ratio that measures a company’s ability to pay short-term and long-term obligations. The current ratio is mainly used to give an idea of the company’s ability to pay back its liabilities (debt and accounts payable) with its assets (cash, marketable securities, inventory, accounts receivable). As such, current ratio can be used to take a rough measurement of a company’s financial health. The higher the current ratio, the more capable the company is of paying its obligations, as it has a larger proportion of asset value relative to the value of its liabilities.

##### Description

The Altman Z-score is the output of a credit-strength test that gauges a publicly traded manufacturing company’s likelihood of bankruptcy. The Altman Z-score is based on five financial ratios that can be calculated from data found on a company’s annual 10K report. It uses profitability, leverage, liquidity, solvency and activity to predict whether a company has a high degree of probability of being insolvent.

A score below 1.8 means the company is probably headed for bankruptcy, while companies with scores above 3 are not likely to go bankrupt. Investors can use Altman Z-scores to determine whether they should buy or sell a particular stock if they’re concerned about the underlying company’s financial strength. Investors may consider purchasing a stock if its Altman Z-Score value is closer to 3 and selling or shorting a stock if the value is closer to 1.8.

$ ext{NOPAT=(Total Pre-Tax Income−Total Non-Operating Income)(1−(Income Tax ExpenseTotal Pre-Tax Income))}$##### Tagset Formula

$ ext{Normalized Net Operating Profit after Tax (NOPAT) = (Total Pre-Tax Income−Total Non-Operating Income+Impairment Charge+Restructuring Charge+Other Special Charges)}\left(1- ext{}\left(\frac{ ext{Income Tax Expense}}{ ext{Total Pre-Tax Income}}\right)\right)$##### Tagset Formula

$ ext{normalizednopat = (totalpretaxincome−nonoperatingincome+impairmentexpense+restructuringcharge+otherspecialcharges)}\left( ext{1−}\left(\frac{ ext{incometaxexpense}}{ ext{totalpretaxincome}}\right)\right)$#### Net Nonoperating Expense (NNE)

##### Description

A non-operating expense is an expense incurred by a business that’s unrelated to its core operations. The most common types of non-operating expenses relate to depreciation, amortization, interest charges or other costs of borrowing.

##### Labeled Formula

$ ext{Net Nonoperating Expense (NNE)}= ext{NOPAT}- ext{Net Income}$##### Tagset Formula

$ ext{netnonopex}= ext{nopat}- ext{netincome} ext{}$#### Invested Capital

##### Description

Invested capital is the total amount of money raised by a company by issuing securities to shareholders and bondholders, and invested capital is calculated by adding the total debt and capital lease obligations to the amount of equity issued to investors.

##### Labeled Formula

$ ext{Invested Capital = (TotalAssets}- ext{(TotalLiabilities}- ext{Short-TermDebt}- ext{Long-TermDebt}- ext{CapitalLeaseObligations) )}$##### Tagset Formula

$ ext{investedcapital}= ext{( totalassets - ( totalliabilities - shorttermdebt - longtermdebt - capitalleaseobligations ) )}$#### Net Nonoperating Obligations (NNO)

##### Description

##### Labeled Formula

$ ext{Net Nonoperating Obligations = Invested Capital - Total Preferred \& Common Equity - Redeemable Noncontrolling Interest}$##### Tagset Formula

$ ext{netnonopobligations = investedcapital - totalequity - redeemablenoncontrollinginterest}$#### Earnings before Interest and Taxes (EBIT)

##### Description

EBIT measures the profit a company generates from its operations, making it synonymous with “operating profit.” By ignoring tax and interest expenses, it focuses solely on a company’s ability to generate earnings from operations, ignoring variables such as the tax burden and capital structure. This focus makes EBIT an especially useful metric for certain applications.

##### Labeled Formula

$ ext{Earnings before Interest and Taxes = Total Revenue - Provision for Credit Losses - Total Operating Expenses}$##### Tagset Formula

$ ext{ebit = totalrevenue - provisionforcreditlosses - totaloperatingexpenses}$#### Capital Expenditures (CapEx)

##### Description

Capital expenditure, or CapEx, are funds used by a company to acquire or upgrade physical assets such as property, industrial buildings or equipment. It is often used to undertake new projects or investments by the firm.

##### Labeled Formula

$ ext{Capital Expenditures = (Purchase of Property, Leasehold Improvements and Equipment\xd7 -1) - Sale of Property, Leasehold Improvements and Equipment}$##### Tagset Formula

$ ext{capex = (purchaseofplantpropertyandequipment\xd7 -1) - saleofplantpropertyandequipment}$#### Earnings before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization (EBITDA)

##### Description

EBITDA stands for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. EBITDA is one indicator of a company’s financial performance and is used as a proxy for the earning potential of a business, although doing so has its drawbacks. Further, EBITDA strips out the cost of debt capital and its tax effects by adding back interest and taxes to earnings.

##### Labeled Formula

$ ext{Earnings before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization = Earnings before Interest and Taxes + Total Depreciation and Amortization}$##### Tagset Formula

$ ext{ebitda = ebit + depreciationandamortization}$#### Total Debt

##### Description

Total debt shows a business’s overall financial situation by subtracting the total value of a company’s liabilities and debts from the total value of its cash, cash equivalents and other liquid assets. All the information necessary to determine a company’s net debt can be found on its balance sheet.

##### Labeled Formula

$ ext{Total Debt = Short-Term Debt+Long-Term Debt+Capital Lease Obligations}$##### Tagset Formula

$ ext{debt = shorttermdebt+longtermdebt+capitalleaseobligations}$#### Free Cash Flow to Firm (FCFF)

##### Description

Free cash flow for the firm (FCFF) is a measure of financial performance that expresses the net amount of cash that is generated for a firm after expenses, taxes and changes in net working capital and investments are deducted. FCFF is essentially a measurement of a company’s profitability after all expenses and reinvestments. It’s one of the many benchmarks used to compare and analyze financial health.

##### Labeled Formula

$ ext{Free Cash Flow to Firm = Net Operating Profit after Tax (NOPAT) - Increase/(Decrease)in Invested Capital}$##### Tagset Formula

$ ext{freecashflow = nopat - investedcapitalincreasedecrease}$#### Total Capital

##### Description

Total capital usually refers to the sum of long-term debt and total shareholder equity; both of these items can be found on the company’s balance sheet. This is one of the calculations that’s traditionally used when determining a company’s return on capital.

##### Labeled Formula

$ ext{Total Capital = Total Debt + Total Preferred \& Common Equity + Redeemable Noncontrolling Interests}$##### Tagset Formula

$ ext{totalcapital = totaldebt+totalequity+redeemablenoncontrollinginterest}$#### Tangible Book Value per Share

##### Description

A tangible book value per share is a method of valuing a company on a per-share basis by measuring its equity after removing any intangible assets. It focuses solely on the value of an organizations tangible assets. Once the value of the tangible assets is determined, that amount is divided by the number of shares currently outstanding.

##### Labeled Formula

$ ext{Tangible Book Value per Share =}\frac{ ext{(Total Common Equity-Goodwill-Intangible Assets)}}{ ext{Weighted Average Diluted Shares Outstanding}}$##### Tagset Formula

$ ext{tangbookvaluepershare=}\frac{ ext{(totalcommonequity-goodwill-intangibleassets)}}{ ext{weightedavedilutedsharesos}}$#### Total Long-Term Debt

##### Description

Long-term debt consists of loans and financial obligations lasting over one year. Long-term debt for a company would include any financing or leasing obligations that are to come due in a greater than 12-month period. Long-term debt also applies to governments: nations can also have long-term debt.

##### Labeled Formula

$ ext{Total Long-Term Debt = Long-Term Debt + Capital Lease Obligations}$##### Tagset Formula

##### Description

Cash return on capital invested (CROCI) is a method of valuation that compares a company’s cash return to its equity.

##### Description

Return on common equity is a measure of how well a company uses its investment dollars to generate profits. It tells common stock investors how effectively their capital is being reinvested.

##### Description

The net debt to earnings before interest depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) ratio is a measurement of leverage. The net debt to EBITDA ratio is a debt ratio that shows how many years it would take for a company to pay back its debt if net debt and EBITDA are held constant. If a company has more cash than debt, the ratio can be negative.

##### Labeled Formula

$ ext{Net Debt to EBITDA =}\frac{ ext{Net Debt}}{ ext{EBITDA}}$##### Tagset Formula

$ ext{netdebttoebitda =}\frac{ ext{netdebt}}{ ext{ebitda}}$#### Long-Term Debt to EBITDA

$ ext{pricetoearnings =}\frac{ ext{close\_price}}{\raisebox{1ex}{$ ext{netincome}$}\!\left/ \!\raisebox{-1ex}{$ ext{weightedavedilutedsharesos}$}\right.}$#### Earnings Yield

##### Description

Earnings yield are the earnings per share for the most recent 12-month period divided by the current market price per share. The earnings yield (which is the inverse of the P/E ratio) shows the percentage of each dollar invested in the stock that was earned by the company. The earnings yield is used by many investment managers to determine optimal asset allocations.

##### Description

Enterprise Value, or EV for short, is a measure of a company’s total value, often used as a more comprehensive alternative to equity market capitalization. The market capitalization of a company is simply its share price multiplied by the number of shares a company has outstanding.

##### Labeled Formula
